The History of Adelphi

A place with a history of exchange

Adelphi Art House takes its name from the historic Adelphi district, created in the late eighteenth century by the brothers John and Robert Adam. Their ambitious development brought together architecture, art, commerce and intellectual life in a unified quarter between the Strand and the Thames. The name Adelphi, derived from the Greek for “brothers”, reflects the partnership at the heart of its creation.

For centuries, the area has been associated with artists, writers, designers, performers and thinkers. The Royal Society of Arts has been based on John Adam Street since 1774, while the wider Adelphi has been home to figures including David Garrick, Thomas Hardy and George Bernard Shaw.

Although much of the original Adelphi was redeveloped in the twentieth century, its cultural character remains embedded in the neighbourhood. Today, Adelphi Art House continues that tradition in a contemporary form: a space for art, ideas, conversation and creative exchange.
